Parish of San Miguel Arcángel. Its neo-Gothic pink stone façade is the city’s most recognizable landmark. It stands across from Jardín Principal, a popular gathering place surrounded by restaurants, cafés, and historic buildings.

Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco. Located approximately 20 minutes from downtown San Miguel de Allende, this religious site is known as the “Sistine Chapel of Mexico” because of the murals covering its walls and ceilings.
The sanctuary also holds an important place in the country’s history. At the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence, Miguel Hidalgo took the banner of the Virgin of Guadalupe from Atotonilco, which would later accompany the insurgents.

On the evening of September 15, people gather around Jardín Principal to witness the ceremony held from the balcony of the Casa de Allende Historical Museum. The civic ceremony begins with the arrival of the torch carrying the “Flame of Freedom,” which has been relayed hand to hand from Querétaro.
The celebration then continues with music and an atmosphere filled with Mexican pride. Throughout the month, the city also hosts civic and cultural activities connected to its history.
