DAY OF THE DEAD IN MEXICO CITY: 3 EXPERIENCES AND WHERE TO STAY
October 02 2026
Travel Tips
Marigold flowers, papel picado, and lit candles announce one of Mexico's most beautiful celebrations. If you are looking for things to do during Day of the Dead in Mexico City, here are three unique experiences to live the tradition, along with accommodation options for your visit.
1. Visit the Monumental Altar in the Zócalo
Start at Plaza de la Constitución in Mexico City's Historic Center. The Monumental Altar (Ofrenda Monumental) is a tribute filled with life, flavor, and color to remember those who are no longer with us and discover how art tells their stories. Take a moment to admire the details and top off your stroll with traditional pan de muerto and hot chocolate.
This year, you can visit the altar from October 29 to November 2.
2. Experience the Legend of La Llorona in Xochimilco
Do you love ghost stories? Imagine a night gliding through the canals of Xochimilco while watching a theatrical performance of one of Mexico's most famous legends.
Departing from the Cuemanco pier, the trajinera boat ride and the staging of La Llorona blend the natural landscape with the mystery of a story passed down through generations.
The announced season for 2026 runs from October 2 to November 22. Check the schedule and available showtimes to plan your visit.
3. Discover the Alumbrada in San Andrés Mixquic
In San Andrés Mixquic, located in the Tláhuac borough, residents gather at the San Andrés Apóstol cemetery on the night of November 2. They turn off all electric lights and ignite thousands of candles and tapers over their loved ones' graves.
Carefully decorated with flowers, the graves serve as a gathering point for families to hold a candlelight vigil, share dinner, pray, sing, and recount memories of their departed.
Arrive early, keep travel time in mind, and explore the site with respect for those taking part in this commemoration.
